The settlement is likely to benefit as many as 500,000 residents whether they have insurance or not, and it covers all Lilly brand-name insulin products, Ellison said at a news conference. Litigation remains pending against two other manufacturers named in the 2018 lawsuit, Sanofi-Aventis and Novo Nordisk. The American Diabetes Association says more than 8 million Americans use insulin, which the body needs to convert food into energy. President Joe Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act capped out-of-pocket costs of insulin to people on Medicare to $35 a month, but only for seniors. Novo Nordisk last year also announced plans for insulin price cuts starting this year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sam Bankman-Fried ’s former top executive blamed the FTX founder on Wednesday of corrupting her values so she could lie and steal and create false balance sheets, things she told jurors at his New York City trial that she never imagined doing before joining his cryptocurrency empire. “I think it made me more willing to do things like lie and steal over time,” she said. She said she once created seven different balance sheets after Bankman-Fried directed her to find ways to conceal things that might look bad to Alameda's lenders. “I didn’t really want to be dishonest, but I also didn’t want them to know the truth,” Ellison said. ___For more AP coverage of Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX: https://apnews.com/hub/sam-bankman-fried

On her first day of testimony, Ellison said Tuesday that she and Bankman-Fried, along with other associates, committed fraud and money laundering, and that he “set up the systems that allowed Alameda” to siphon money from FTX customer accounts. Prosecutors accuse Bankman-Fried, 31, of orchestrating a scheme to steal billions of dollars from customer accounts in FTX, his now-bankrupt crypto trading platform. If she were given a maximum sentence on the seven counts, she could face more than 100 years in prison. Her testimony is considered crucial to prosecutors’ case that SBF used both FTX and Alameda as his own personal piggy bank. If found guilty of all seven criminal counts and given the maximum sentence, Bankman-Fried faces the prospect of 110 years in prison.

Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research. carolinecapital/XProsecutors’ case hinges on evidence that FTX and Alameda were deeply financially intertwined, despite repeated assurances from Bankman-Fried that they were separate companies, operating independently from one another. As Alameda was spiraling last fall, Ellison told her employees that the fund had borrowed money from FTX customer accounts to pay back lenders. Already, prosecutors have presented evidence that looks bad for Bankman-Fried, though the defense has yet to present its case.

While Woody Allen's film may be a reference point to “American Fiction,” direct comparisons are harder to come by for such a breezy but biting commentary. Directing a film, Jefferson says, wasn't necessarily a lifelong ambition. That “American Fiction” is hard to categorize, he says, might mean he's on the right track. “This being my first movie, I’m eager to find what my voice is,” Jefferson says. ___Follow AP Film Writer Jake Coyle on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/jakecoyleAP

REUTERS/Brian Snyder/File PhotoMENLO PARK, California (Reuters) - Oracle on Wednesday said that it has modified its flagship database software to work on a new category of computing chip, starting with chips from Ampere Computing, a startup founded by former Intel executives. Oracle’s database software is used by major banks and corporations to track transactions. On Wednesday, Oracle said that the database will now also run on chips made based on a technological architecture from Arm Ltd, the same underlying technology that is in mobile phones. Ellison said Ampere’s chips are much more power efficient than offerings from its other two major chip suppliers, Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia. By upgrading to Ampere, we’re able to take that room, double the compute and stay within the same power envelope,” Ellison said.

CNN —The Curiosity rover has captured a stunning new mosaic that reveals the dramatic, colorful hues of morning and afternoon light on the surface of Mars. One panorama was taken at 9:20 a.m., while the other was taken at 3:40 p.m., both local Mars time. The image is similar to another postcard taken by Curiosity in November 2021. Curiosity has been exploring the foothills of the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer) Mount Sharp at the center of Gale Crater since it landed in 2012. “Mars’ shadows get sharper and deeper when there’s low dust and softer when there’s lots of dust,” Ellison said.

Business partners turn on Sam Bankman-Fried

Last week, as FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was being extradited to the United States from the Bahamas, two of his former business partners pleaded guilty to multiple charges of fraud and conspiracy. “I am truly sorry for what I did,” Ellison told the court. She and Bankman-Fried were close business associates who briefly dated. Bankman-Fried, 30, appeared Thursday in a US courtroom in New York, where a federal judge released him on a $250 million bond. Following his court appearance, Bankman-Fried was spotted in a business class lounge at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Sam Bankman-Fried and other FTX executives received billions of dollars in secret loans from the crypto mogul’s Alameda Research, the hedge fund’s former chief told a judge when she pleaded guilty to her role in the exchange’s collapse. Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang both pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors as part of their plea agreements. Bankman-Fried has acknowledged risk-management failures at FTX but said he does not believe he has criminal liability. A flurry of customer withdrawals in early November amid concerns about commingling of FTX funds with Alameda prompted FTX to declare bankruptcy on Nov. 11. Bankman-Fried was arrested in capital Nassau on Dec. 12 and arrived in the United States on Wednesday after consenting to extradition.
